Unattended Underage Refugees in Austria. Asylum Procedure, School, Work, Family & Friends, Language

Year after Year, thousands of children and teenagers flee alone, without their parents, from crisis regions in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. In 2009 1.182 of these »unattended underage refugees« came to Austria. They have hoped for a new prospect of their future, peace, security and protection. When they had reached Europe, they experienced enormous disappointments and before they finally arrived, they had had to go through suspicion, harassments and gruelling waiting.

This book gives an insight into the lives of unattended underage refugees, discusses actual problems of the asylum procedure and the care of teenage asylum seekers, and it gives impetuses for an improvement of the situation. In the course of the researches intensive conversations with experts were led, statistics and actual literature evaluated.

But the most important part of the book is the voice of the young refugees: they tell of their adventurous flights, the reception in Austria, their anxieties and hopes. They describe the experiences with their new homeland, what they appreciate in Austria, who and what has helped them and which obstacles they have had to overcome.
