Gerald Faschingeder, born in 1972, is an economic and social historian. He researches and publishes to the subject of culture and development. Since 2004 he has been director of the Paulo Freire Centre for transdisciplinary research and education of development.
Clemens Six, born in 1975, studied history and theology at the universities of Salzburg and Vienna. He is consultant at the UNESCO in Paris and employee at the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE). His main focus lies on the contemporary history of India, religious fundamentalism, international development cooperation and development policy of the European Union. 
    [books_zum_Buch] => Die Diskussion über Kultur und Entwicklung floriert. Es scheint aber, als verberge sich hinter so mancher Kulturdebatte eigentlich eine Religionsdebatte. Doch Religion und Kultur sind nicht ident. Birgt Religion ein spezifisches Potenzial auch für Entwicklungsprozesse in sich? Oder entfaltet Religion eine Widerstandskraft gegen Entwicklung, etwa aus Tendenzen zum Konservatismus heraus? Es lohnt, nach besonderen Bedingungen zu fragen, unter denen dies sehr wohl der Fall ist. Die vorliegende Publikation nähert sich dieser Diskussion in fünf thematischen Bereichen interdisziplinär an. Der einleitende Teil widmet sich den theoretischen Aspekten des Begriffspaares Religion und Entwicklung. Darauffolgend wird die Bedeutung von Religion in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit thematisiert und untersucht, inwieweit Religion bzw. Religiosität hinsichtlich ihrer Nachhaltigkeit überhaupt in die entwicklungstheoretische Debatte mit einbezogen werden muss. Drittens kommt die Rolle von Religion für Entwicklung als sozioökonomische Transformation zur Sprache. Der vierte Teil thematisiert mögliche Zusammenhänge zwischen Religion und nationalstaatlicher Entwicklung, und es wird der These nachgegangen, wonach Religion als Lehrgebäude, Moralkodex oder Gesetzessammlungen in einer direkten Wechselwirkung mit Staatsbildung bzw. Staatesentwicklung steht. Der abschließende fünfte Teil kreist um das Thema der internationalen Entwicklung. Welche Bedeutung misst die internationale Gemeinschaft dem Faktor Religion bei, um welchen Religionsbegriff handelt es sich dabei, und wie manifestiert sich diese Bedeutung?

<p>The discussion of culture and development flourishes. But it seems as if beyond some of these cultural debates are in fact religious ones. But religion and culture are not the same. Does religion entail a specific potential also for development processes? Or does religion unfold a resistance force against development, for example out of the tendencies to conservatism? </p>
<p>This scholarly work approaches this discussion transdisciplinarily through five thematic fields: The introducing part handles with the theoretical aspects of the terms religion and development. Then the significance of religion in the context of development cooperation is analysed especially in regard to the question whether religion and religiousness has to be included in the theoretical debate of development. Thirdly, the importance of religion as socio-economic transformation for development  is discussed. The fourth part broaches the issue of possible connections of religion and national development. Also the thesis that religion as theory, body of laws or ethical code has a direct reciprocity with the building and development of a nation is questioned. The last part deals with the international development. Which significance does the international community give religion, which term of religion does it use and how does this significance manifest itself? </p>

Dr. Clemens Six, geb. 1975, Studium der Geschichte und Theologie an der Universität Salzburg und Wien; Consultant bei UNESCO, Paris; Mitarbeiter der Österreichischen Forschungsstiftung für Entwicklungshilfe; Arbeitsschwerpunkte: Zeitgeschichte Indiens, religiöser Fundamentalismus, Internationale Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, Entwicklungspolitik der EU.<br />
<br />
Gerald Faschingeder, born in 1972, is an economic and social historian. He researches and publishes to the subject of culture and development. Since 2004 he has been director of the Paulo Freire Centre for transdisciplinary research and education of development.<br />
Clemens Six, born in 1975, studied history and theology at the universities of Salzburg and Vienna. He is consultant at the UNESCO in Paris and employee at the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE). His main focus lies on the contemporary history of India, religious fundamentalism, international development cooperation and development policy of the European Union. </p>                        </p>
